Independent Inspections

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) issues quality ratings to give people a clear understanding of how well English home care providers perform against national standards. Through this system people can then make informed choices about the services currently available to them.

Regulation in Scotland and Wales

The Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care and the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales do not use the same rating system as the CQC but you can access their inspection reports on our Scottish and Welsh branches using the links on the right of this page. CQC Quality Ratings Explained

The CQC conducts regular inspections during which information is gathered to form a set of outcome areas which are then assessed.

During the inspection CQC will:

Talk to our clients (and sometimes our clients’ relatives)
Look at how the service is run including staff recruitment, training and staff support
Look at how well our clients have been cared for
Review paperwork to ensure all documentation is up to date.

Once the data has been captured, it is then assessed and the CQC will award a quality rating.

CQC quality ratings are awarded in the form of stars as detailed in the table below:

Award	Description
3 stars	This means it is excellent
2 stars	This means it is good
1 star	This means it is adequate
0 stars	This means it is poor

Once the quality rating has been awarded, CQC will prepare a report which contains details of the inspection which took place and the quality rating that has been awarded. This report is then issued to the care home or service provider. The report is then made available at the premises for people to view or alternatively people can download a copy from the CQC website.

We respond to all clients surveyed explaining our findings and how we are going to improve our services.
